There are 2 types of canisters: Canisters with electric power heads and canisters with air driven, suction only carpeting heads. Canisters with electric driven power heads are the ideal and recommended method for cleaning all pile carpeting. Canister vacuums are usually lighter in weight and can sometimes be more versatile for cleaning stairs and other hard to reach areas.
